The sofa looked right in the store. You measured the wall. You measured the sofa. The numbers cleared. It arrived, and the room felt wrong in a way that had nothing to do with measurements.

That experience is not bad luck and it’s not bad taste. It’s what happens when you optimize for one variable — absolute size — while scale, which is something different, goes untested. Scale is not about whether a piece fits in a space. It’s about whether a piece belongs in a space, relative to everything else in it.
